A CREATIVE JOURNEY…

I was born and raised in Southwestern Pennsylvania.  I now reside in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of Westmoreland County.  When I am not spending time with my camera, one can find me in the barn with my Thoroughbred, Alpha Lade, on which I ride Dressage.

I’ve always felt a calling to be creative. In my early years, I thought perhaps I was destined to be an artist; however, a brief stint at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh taught me I was not going to be the next Monet. Still, I could not escape a sense of creativity, deep within me, just longing to find its outlet.  Later in life, I earned a Bachelor Degree in English/Literature then tried my hand at creative writing, and jumped into an MFA program with both feet. Despite being disillusioned with my academic experience, I found my voice, and confidence, and knew I was on the right track to discovering my medium for artistic expression. Then, serendipitously, I stumbled upon photography. I’ve also found I love the technical aspects of producing photographic images as much as I love the artistic aspects, and I’ve been blessed by the tutelage of several accomplished photographers in the region. I look forward to a lifetime of learning and experimenting, combining technique and artistry, and, most importantly, bringing visually and emotionally stimulating images to my clients.

IT BEGAN IN THE BARN…

While earning my MFA in Creative Nonfiction writing, one of my mentors educated me in the art of creating a scene while another mentor encouraged me to write what I see.   In January 2009, I purchased a Canon EOS 40D as a writing tool to create the visual images to write my story for the final project.  I had a wealth of knowledge about horses and writing, but when I first picked up a camera, I didn’t know one iota about photography.  Nonetheless, I sat for hours around the barn and in the paddock photographing my horses.  By horse show season, I was in the habit of carrying my camera with me to capture  ‘horse moments’.  Little did I know, this whole experience would gracefully guide me to unearth my voice as a visual storyteller.

Fast forward and years later, my journey has been self taught and experimental.  After thousands of photographs, seven website trials, various logo designs, many many different fonts/color palettes and, not to mention, traveling the learning curve of social media… I am finally able to embrace my personal style and artistic voice as a photographer along with learning the craft and marketing myself.  Being creative has been part of me my whole life, but now I am able to apply the gold nuggets of knowledge to photograph what I see!
